Abstract

In this paper, I define and describe the concept of the ‘Virtual University,’ and discuss how traditional institutions, such as universities, might be re-conceived in the information age. This discussion is located in the New Zealand context, a small player in the international educational marketplace. In particular, I argue that the emergence of new digital marketplaces for learning has broad - but generally unconsidered - implications on the standardisation and commercialisation of education.
