Description

We present initial efforts to reconstruct snow water equivalent (SWE) using tree ring data. Initial testing uses chronologies obtained from the International Tree Ring Data Base (ITRDB) to reconstruct observed SWE at Natural Resources Conservation Service snow course site 12m03 (Webster Flat) near the Virgin river headwaters. Results demonstrate proof of concept in the use of tree ring data to reconstruct SWE. The methodology used in this testing will be used to reconstruct SWE in a gridded fashion throughout Utah using a combination of ITRDB data and tree ring data obtained from the US Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, which provides a sampling of trees throughout western U.S. states at very high spatial resolution.
