Modern Climatology

Climatology, the study of climate, is no longer regarded as a single discipline that treats climate as something that fluctuates only within the unchanging boundaries described by historical statistics. The field has recognized that climate is something that changes continually under the influence of physical and biological forces and so, cannot be understood in isolation but rather, is one that includes diverse scientific disciplines that play their role in understanding a highly complex coupled "whole system" that is the earth's climate. The modern era of climatology is echoed in this book. On the one hand it offers a broad synoptic perspective but also considers the regional standpoint, as it is this that affects what people need from climatology. Aspects on the topic of climate change - what is often considered a contradiction in terms - is also addressed. It is all too evident these days that what recent work in climatology has revealed carries profound implications for economic and social policy; it is with these in mind that the final chapters consider acumens as to the application of what has been learned to date.

Hydraulic Loss Coefficients for Culverts

Culverts are designed and constructed to be hydraulically efficient, such that they are able to pass flood flows without overtopping the road embankment. Flow passing through a culvert typically experiences an increase in velocity, relative to the approach channel flow, due to reductions in cross-sectional flow area. Increased flow velocity can cause additional outlet erosion as well as be a problem for many types of migratory species. In addition to migratory species, resident fish such as juvenile salmon can also be affected by culverts. Juvenile salmon move up and down streams as population pressures and food sources change. If high velocities in culverts provide barriers to this movement, food sources and population may be limited. Other fish species may have requirements similar to those of juvenile salmon or may require upstream movement for spawning. Research in the area of culvert hydraulics has centered on concrete box culverts and circular corrugated metal pipe culverts. The hydraulic analyses of these culvert types have been well defined for conventional installations, but not for environmentally sensitive and nontraditional culverts. It is desirable to design and construct some culvert crossings to minimize their impact on the natural environment. Culverts are now being designed to maintain natural velocities and minimize turbulence to allow migratory species to pass through the culvert barrel. Such designs may add baffles on the invert, bury the culvert invert, or use bottomless culverts to provide for a natural stream invert. Other designs use larger and wider culverts to reduce the amount of contraction and acceleration. In order to design these culverts that minimize impacts to the natural stream environment, designers need the associated hydraulic equations and loss coefficients to be evaluated and made more accurate. In NCHRP Project 15-24, Utah State University conducted physical, numerical, and computer modeling to refine existing hydraulic relationships and develop new ones for analysis and design of culverts for conventional and nontraditional, environmentally sensitive installations.

Green vs. Green: The Political, Legal, and Administrative Pitfalls Facing Green Energy Production (Routledge Research in Environmental Policy and Politics)

Renewable and carbon-neutral energy have been promoted as the future of energy production in the United States. Non-traditional energy sources show promise as alternatives to fossil fuels and may provide a sustainable source of energy in increasingly uncertain energy markets. However, these new sources of energy face their own set of political, administrative, and legal challenges. Green vs. Green explores how mixed land ownership and existing law and regulation present serious challenges to the development of alternative energy sources in the United States. Analytically examining and comparing five green energy sectors; wind, solar, geothermal, biofuel and hydro power, Ryan M. Yonk, Randy T. Simmons, and Brian C. Steed argue that discussing alternative energy without understanding these pitfalls creates unrealistic expectations regarding the ability to substitute "green" energy for traditional sources. The micro-goals of protecting individual areas, species, small-scale ecosystems, and other local environmental aims often limits ability to achieve macro-goals like preventing global climate change or transitioning to large-scale green energy production. Statutes and regulations designed to protect environmental and cultural integrity from degradation directly conflict with other stated environmental ends. Although there is substantial interest in adding clean energy to the grid, it appears that localized environmental interests interfere with broader environmental policy goals and the application of existing environmental laws and regulations may push us closer to gridlock. Green vs. Green provides a fascinating look into how existing environmental law created or will create substantial regulatory hurdles for future energy generations.

The Smart Marketer's Toolbox uses the marketing innovations created by the social media and technology revolutions in combination with proven, time-tested marketing strategies to create a blueprint that can help anyone create world-class marketing plans. Small and mid-sized business owners trying to steal away customers to grow their business; entrepreneurs developing new products and services; even seasoned marketers and CEO's seeking ways to invigorate established enterprises will all find valuable insight and strategies that can be implemented today! Technology is the force around which marketing orbits. New technology, media and hardware are being created at breakneck speed to help marketers reach consumers. Just when you think you're up-to-date on the latest Smartphone innovation, mobile app, social network, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest or other invention, something new comes along that changes everything. Many young marketers growing up in this age of rapid technological advancement are so focused on taking advantage of the next new thing, they've failed to learn or integrate basic marketing strategies that have been time-proven to work. Many seasoned marketers, having embraced and found success using the core strategies of the past, disparately cling to old tactics, discounting the opportunities created by new technology, media and hardware. The Smart Marketer's Toolbox is written by Eric Schulz, a 25-year marketing veteran of Procter & Gamble, The Coca-Cola Company, The Walt Disney Company, consultant to several Fortune 500 corporations and now a marketing professor at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. In preparing this book, Schulz has analyzed hundreds of brands in dozens of product and services categories to synthesize this learning into easy to follow principles and strategies. His conversation-like writing boils down the information into easy-to-execute, down-to-earth insights which can be understood and utilized by anyone. Schulz previously authored "The Marketing Game, How The World's Best Companies Play to Win", a marketing textbook that has been used in many of the top business schools around the world.

Aquanomics: Water Markets and the Environment

Water is becoming increasingly scarce. If recent usage trends continue, shortages are inevitable. Aquanomics discusses some of the instruments and policies that may be implemented to postpone, or even avoid, the onset of “water crises.” These policies include establishing secure and transferable private water rights and extending these rights to uses that traditionally have not been allowed, including altering in-stream flows and ecosystem functions. The editors argue that such policies will help maximize water quantity and quality as water becomes scarcer and more valuable. Aquanomics contains many examples of how this is being accomplished, particularly in the formation of water markets and market-like exchanges of water rights.

Many observers see calamity ahead unless water supplies are harnessed and effectively conserved, and unless water quality can be improved. It is also clear that declining water quality is a serious problem in much of the world, as increasing human activities induce high levels of water degradation. Those who voice these concerns, argue the contributors to this volume, fail to consider the forces for improvement inherent in market political-economic systems that can address water issues. The contributors see water quality in economically advanced countries as improving, and they believe this establishes the validity of market-based approaches.

Existing and impending water shortages argue for improving water quantity and quality management. Groundwater Optimization Handbook: Flow, Contaminant Transport, and Conjunctive Management helps you formulate and solve groundwater optimization problems to ensure sustainable supplies of adequate quality and quantity. It shows you how to more effectively use simulation-optimization (S-O) modeling, an economically valuable groundwater management tool that couples simulation models with mathematical optimization techniques. Written for readers of varying familiarity with groundwater hydrology and mathematical optimization, the handbook approaches complex problems realistically. Its techniques have been applied in many legal settings, with produced strategies providing up to 57% improvement over those developed without S-O modeling. These techniques supply constructible designs, planning and management strategies, and metrics for performance-based contracts.

An ambitious if ultimately unrealized plan to revolt that ended in the conviction and hanging of over two dozen men, Gabriel’s Conspiracy of 1800 sought nothing less than to capture the capital city of Richmond and end slavery in Virginia. Whispers of Rebellion draws on recent scholarship and extensive archival material to provide the clearest view yet of this fascinating chapter in the history of slavery—and to question much about the case that has been accepted as fact. In his examination of the slave Gabriel and his group of insurgents, Michael Nicholls focuses on the neighborhood of the Brook, north of Richmond, as the plot’s locus, revealing the area’s economic and familial ties, the geographic proximity of the key conspirators, and how their contacts allowed their plan to spread across three counties and into the cities of Richmond and Petersburg. Nicholls explores under-documented aspects of the conspiracy, such as the participants’ recruitment and motives, showing them to be less ideologically driven than previously supposed. The author also looks at the state’s swift and brutal response, and argues persuasively that, rather than the coalition between blacks and whites that has been described in other accounts, the participants were all slaves or free blacks, suffering under an oppressive white population and willing to die for their freedom.

Traditional teachings derived from stories and practices passed through generations lie at the core of a well-balanced Navajo life. These teachings are based on a very different perspective on the physical and spiritual world than that found in general American culture. Dinéji Na`nitin is an introduction to traditional Navajo teachings and history for a non-Navajo audience, providing a glimpse into this unfamiliar world and illuminating the power and experience of the Navajo worldview. Historian Robert McPherson discusses basic Navajo concepts such as divination, good and evil, prophecy, and metaphorical thought, as well as these topics' relevance in daily life, making these far-ranging ideas accessible to the contemporary reader. He also considers the toll of cultural loss on modern Navajo culture as many traditional values and institutions are confronted by those of dominant society. Using both historical and modern examples, he shows how cultural change has shifted established views and practices and illustrates the challenge younger generations face in maintaining the beliefs and customs their parents and grandparents have shared over generations. This intimate look at Navajo values and customs will appeal not only to students and scholars of Native American studies, ethnic studies, and anthropology but to any reader interested in Navajo culture or changing traditional lifeways.

Born in the early 1940s in northern Arizona’s high country desert, Jim Dandy began life imbued with the traditions of the Navajo people. Raised by his father and grandfather—both medicine men—and a grandmother steeped in Navajo practices, he embraced their teachings and followed in their footsteps. But attending the LDS Placement program in northern Utah changed his life’s course when he became a member of the Mormon Church. Following graduation from high school, Jim served an LDS mission among his people, obtained a bachelor’s degree, and entered the work force in southeastern Utah as a career counselor, teacher, and community advocate who improved educational opportunities on the Navajo Reservation. Jim has led a life of service and teaching. He maintains the traditional philosophy with which he was raised and the Mormon beliefs that he learned and continues to follow; his life reflects the values inherent in these two different worlds. Readers interested in Navajo philosophy will find his blend of these two distinct views fascinating, while others will better understand the effects of the controversial placement program on the life of one individual. However, this is primarily the warm story of a man’s life among his people and his love for them and their culture.

Shoshoni is a member of the Central Numic branch of the Numic language family of the Uto-Aztecan stock. It was formerly spoken in a broad, continuous arc extending from southwestern Nevada up through northwestern Utah and southern Idaho to central Wyoming. There are four generally recognized dialect complexes–Western Shoshoni, Gosiute, Northern Shoshoni, and Eastern Shoshoni. Today, the Shoshoni community lives in colonies and reservations scattered throughout the former range.

Shoshoni is closely related to the Comanche language of Oklahoma. Shoshoni has an underlying obstruent system which consists of voiceless stops /p, t, k, kw/, two voiceless fricatives /s, h/, and a voiceless affricate /ts/, but a surface phonetic system that includes voiced and voiceless stops, fricatives, and affricates in all the places of articulation of the underlying stops and affricates. Nominals in Shoshoni are inflected for three cases and for singular, dual, and plural number. Shoshoni aspect and tense are reflected as suffixes on the verb stem and there is a large set of instrumental prefixes that can be prefixed as well. Adverbial relations are marked by postpositions. Shoshoni word order is relatively free, although there is a marked tendency toward SXV. Subordinate clauses in Shoshoni are marked for same reference of subjects or for switch reference of subjects.

Cave Culture in Maghrebi Literature: Imagining Self and Nation (After the Empire: The Francophone World and Postcolonial France)

Cave Culture in Maghrebi Literature: Imagining Self and Nation discusses key postcolonial Francophone North African texts, centering on folktales, war, Berber traditions, femininity, sexuality, the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962), and the Algerian Civil War (1992–1999). It explores the literary and cultural evidence testifying to the role of the cave as a locus of worship, transfiguration, dominance, and revelation in the context of colonial and postcolonial power struggles, and its wider significance in the context of nationalism and femininity, sexuality, and postcolonial identity construction. Historically, the cave has symbolized the explosive colonial and postcolonial struggles. It was a crucial site of colonial subjugation in North Africa during the colonial conquest in the nineteenth century and during the Algerian War of Independence in the twentieth century. Featuring narratives by authors such as Yamina Méchakra, Georges Buis, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Maïssa Bey, Assia Djebar, Driss Chraïbi, Hawa Djabali, Mohammed Dib, Nabile Farès, Larêej Waciny, and filmmaker Moumen Smihi, this book examines the cave as a metaphor of the collective imaginary of the North African literary subject and offers new insights into the field of Francophone literary studies. The complexity of the cave metaphor in this body of literature mirrors the struggle for identity at work in Francophone postcolonial literature: be it the struggle for colonial independence, the articulation of femininity, or, in a broader framework, the tensions at work in hybridized societies that are firmly rooted in tradition but at the same time curiously turned toward the Occident. Literary caves are firmly situated in the physical and psychic territories of North Africa, yet they offer bridges to the West and in particular to continental France. A combination of religious mysticism and natural splendor makes the cave a powerful symbol that has had a profound impact on the imaginations of artists on both sides of the Mediterranean. The literary cave has a strong hold on the Algerian and Moroccan collective imaginary and often stands as a metaphor for the homeland: the patrie. It defines the characters’ subjectivity, on both a conscious and unconscious level—as shown by its many literary manifestations, be it in folktales, feminist, war, or love narratives.

In 2000, the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) published How to Develop and Administer Institutional Undergraduate Research Programs, by Toufic Hakim. Although only 75 pages, Hakim’s book had a powerful influence on developing undergraduate research programs. This book has much the same aim—to provide models of undergraduate research programs that can instruct and inspire. It is the next-generation reference book and manual for those who are seeking to start or enhance existing undergraduate research programs, drawing on the wisdom and experience of more than 25 contributors. Showcasing offices and programs of undergraduate research at a variety of institutional types at various points of maturity, each of the model chapters is devoted to an institutional type and follows a template, thus making it easy for the reader to browse chapters and trace a particular theme: mission, resources, events, publications, and even challenges. The volume also offers pragmatic advice on assessment, special programs, and summer experiences. Sharing ideas and resources is a hallmark of the Council on Undergraduate Research, and it is in this spirit that Undergraduate Research Offices and Programs: Models and Practices was developed.

Identifying students for gifted education services is a process filled with controversy, confusion, myths, and misunderstandings. Editor Scott L. Hunsaker’s new volume sheds much needed light on this difficult topic. With contributions from leading scholars, researchers, and practitioners in gifted education, fifteen chapters explore in depth the research and practice of identification of gifted and talented students. The text presents multiple points of view and does not shy away for some of the particularly thorny issues surrounding identification, specifically

the theory-practice gap,
under-representation of diverse populations,
identification as status bestowal rather than assessment process,
rigidity in use of processes and instruments,
the search for the magic-bullet test, and
validity of non-verbal intelligence tests.
Whether you are an administrator, teacher, gifted education specialist, professor, or parent, Identification offers insights presented nowhere else.

Prospect Theory and Foreign Policy Analysis in the Asia Pacific: Rational Leaders and Risky Behavior

Why does North Korea behave erratically in pursuing its nuclear weapons program? Why did the United States prefer bilateral alliances to multilateral ones in Asia after World War II? Why did China become "nice"—no more military coercion—in dealing with the pro-independence Taiwan President Chen Shuibian after 2000? Why did China compromise in the negotiation of the Chunxiao gas exploration in 2008 while Japan became provocative later in the Sino-Japanese disputes in the East China Sea? North Korea’s nuclear behavior, U.S. alliance strategy, China’s Taiwan policy, and Sino-Japanese territorial disputes are all important examples of seemingly irrational foreign policy decisions that have determined regional stability and Asian security. By examining major events in Asian security, this book investigates why and how leaders make risky and seemingly irrational decisions in international politics. The authors take the innovative step of integrating the neoclassical realist framework in political science and prospect theory in psychology. Their analysis suggests that political leaders are more likely to take risky actions when their vital interests and political legitimacy are seriously threatened. For each case, the authors first discuss the weaknesses of some of the prevailing arguments, mainly from rationalist and constructivist theorizing, and then offer an alternative explanation based on their political legitimacy-prospect theory model. This pioneering book tests and expands prospect theory to the study of Asian security and challenges traditional, expected-utility-based, rationalist theories of foreign policy behavior.

Clinical training is challenging for supervisees, many of whom are unsure how to navigate the supervisory process and effectively build clinical skills and professional competence. While research and book-length texts on effective supervision have proliferated, these are typically directed towards supervisors and clinical educators.

Since it was first published in 2004, Falender and Shafranske's Clinical Supervision: A Competency-Based Approach has become the standard, go-to resource on supervisory and clinical competence. Now the authors have created an empirically-supported yet practical book for student and interns.

Written in an interactive style with ''real life'' case examples and reflection activities, this book shows students how to establish effective working supervisory relationships and understand and make use of formative and summative evaluations. Empirically-supported yet highly practical, this is an essential text that normalizes the anxieties and conflicts that typically arise during supervision.

Environmental Health and Hazard Risk Assessment: Principles and Calculations explains how to evaluate and apply environmental health and hazard risk assessment calculations in a variety of real-life settings. Using a wealth of examples and case studies, the book helps readers develop both a theoretical understanding and a working knowledge of the principles of health, safety, and accident management. The book takes a pragmatic approach to risk assessment, identifying problems and outlining solutions. Organized into four parts, the text:

Presents an overview of the history of environmental health and hazard problems, legal considerations, and emergency planning and response
Tackles the broad subject of health risk assessment, discussing toxicology, exposure, and health risk characterization
Examines hazard risk assessment in significant detail—from problem identification, probability, consequence, and characterization of hazards/accidents to the fundamentals of applicable statistics theory
Uses case studies to demonstrate the applications and calculations of risk analysis for real systems

The book assumes only a basic background in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, making it suitable for students and those new to the field. It is also a valuable reference for practicing engineers, scientists, technicians, technical managers, and others tasked with ensuring that plant and equipment operations meet applicable standards and regulations. A clear and comprehensive resource, this book offers guidance for those who want to reduce or eliminate the environmental health effects and accidents that can result in loss of life, materials, and property.

Roman Catholic sisters first traveled to the American West as providers of social services, education, and medical assistance. In Across God's Frontiers, Anne M. Butler traces the ways in which sisters challenged and reconfigured contemporary ideas about women, work, religion, and the West; moreover, she demonstrates how religious life became a vehicle for increasing women's agency and power. Moving to the West introduced significant changes for these women, including public employment and thoroughly unconventional monastic lives. As nuns and sisters adjusted to new circumstances and immersed themselves in rugged environments, Butler argues, the West shaped them; and through their labors and charities, the sisters in turn shaped the West. These female religious pioneers built institutions, brokered relationships between Indigenous peoples and encroaching settlers, and undertook varied occupations, often without organized funding or direct support from the church hierarchy. A comprehensive history of Roman Catholic nuns and sisters in the American West, Across God's Frontiers reveals Catholic sisters as dynamic and creative architects of civic and religious institutions in western communities.

Global change threatens ecosystems worldwide, and tropical systems with their high diversity and rapid development are of special concern. We can mitigate the impacts of change if we understand how tropical ecosystems respond to disturbance. For tropical forests and streams in Puerto Rico this book describes the impacts of, and recovery from, hurricanes, landslides, floods, droughts, and human disturbances in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico. These ecosystems recover quickly after natural disturbances, having been shaped over thousands of years by such events. Human disturbance, however, has longer-lasting impacts. Chapters are by authors with many years of experience in Puerto Rico and other tropical areas and cover the history of research in these mountains, a framework for understanding disturbance and response, the environmental setting, the disturbance regime, response to disturbance, biotic mechanisms of response, management implications, and future directions. The text provides a strong perspective on tropical ecosystem dynamics over multiple scales of time and space.

In 1991, Denis Hlynka and John Belland released Paradigms Regained, a well received reader for graduate students in the field of educational technology. The Role of Criticism in Understanding Problem Solving updates some of those ideas initially proposed in Paradigms Regained, and extends the conversation into the contemporary discourse regarding problem based learning (PBL). Paradigms proposed the idea of criticism as a third method for the conduction of educational research, the first two being qualitative and qualitative. The concept of criticism as a tool for research is not well established in educational technology, although it is well established in other educational research traditions such as Curriculum Studies. Unfortunately, it is not always clear how criticism can be applied. This book views criticism as a way to step back and look at an educational intervention within educational technology through a particular critical lens. Criticism is viewed as a valuable approach to guiding meta analyses and theoretical studies, serving to prevent the proverbial "spinning of the wheels" that often happens in educational research. By indicating new potential research questions and directions, criticism approaches can invigorate educational research. This book revisits the ideals of criticism in order to establish their usefulness for studying educational technology interventions to support problem based learning. First, a few foundational chapters set the stage for the conversations on criticism. Then, the role criticism can play in enhancing analysis and interpretation of the PBL literature is explored. Finally, case studies addressing the central concepts of the text are presented and dissected. This book represents a complete overhaul and rethinking of the use of criticism as a method for understanding and furthering the research area of PBL within the field of Educational technology.

The Rhetoric of Redemption: Chesterton, Ethical Criticism, and the Common Man examines the literary criticism written by G. K. Chesterton between 1902 and 1913 from a rhetorical standpoint to ascertain whether Chesterton did in fact create the 'criticism for the common man' he aimed for. To answer this question, this book explores the relationships among writers, readers, books, and critics both during the time Chesterton first began writing and in the context of rhetorical and critical tradition from Plato to the present day. Ultimately, this book argues that Chesterton's unorthodox approach to literature, while still dismissed by the academic establishment, raises fundamental questions about the nature and function of literature and criticism that need to be raised anew in every generation and especially in the wake of each new critical episteme.

The Rhetoric of Redemption is extremely useful for both scholars and students of literary criticism and Chesterton enthusiasts who are interested in his approach to literature. This book would also be a valuable resource for courses in nineteenth-century British literature, literary criticism, and rhetorical analysis.

For more than a century, oil has been the engine of growth for a society that delivers an unprecedented standard of living to many. We now take for granted that economic growth is good, necessary, and even inevitable, but also feel a sense of unease about the simultaneous growth of complexity in the processes and institutions that generate and manage that growth. As societies grow more complex through the bounty of cheap energy, they also confront problems that seem to increase in number and severity. In this era of fossil fuels, cheap energy and increasing complexity have been in a mutually-reinforcing spiral. The more energy we have and the more problems our societies confront, the more we grow complex and require still more energy. How did our demand for energy, our technological prowess, the resulting need for complex problem solving, and the end of easy oil conspire to make the Deepwater Horizon oil spill increasingly likely, if not inevitable? This book explains the real causal factors leading up to the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history, a disaster from which it will take decades to recover.

Autobiography, Ecology, and the Well-Placed Self expands the field of autobiography studies by describing an emergent genre, natural biography that embeds the human subject in a more-than-human world. Through an ecocritical analysis of three contemporary U.S. authors—William Kittredge, Terry Tempest Williams, and Mary Clearman Blew—Nathan Straight illustrates how ecologically situated life writing bridges the human/nature divide and responds to the pressing environmental and communal demands of our times. In his exploration of the well-placed self he challenges traditional concepts of the autobiographical subject and considers new models of selfhood in relation to regional and national identities. His illuminating discussions of specific texts engage with ecofeminist and bioregional theory and will appeal to readers in environmental studies, literary criticism, and American regionalism. Autobiography, Ecology, and the Well-Placed Self presents an important new perspective on place-based identity and literature, and the inclusion of a Selected Readings appendix makes it a valuable resource for scholars and students alike.

A comprehensive guide that includes a vast range of species and plant communities and employs thorough, original keys. Based primarily on vegetative characteristics, the keys don't require that flowers or other reproductive features be present, like many plant guides. And this guide's attention to woody plants as a whole allows one to identify a much greater variety of plants. That especially suits an arid region such as Utah with less diverse native trees.

Woody plants are those that have stems that persist above ground even through seasons that don't favor growth, due to low precipitation or temperatures. Woody Plants of Utah employs dichotomous identification keys that are comparable to a game of twenty questions. It works through a process of elimination by choosing sequential alternatives. Detailed, illustrated plant descriptions complement the keys and provide additional botanical and environmental information in relation to a useful introductory categorization of Utah plant communities. Supplementary tools include photos, distribution maps, and an illustrated glossary.

This work is dedicated to the new college unit and its faculty and students with the hope of a prosperous future on the heels of a long tradition of creative artistry.

The work received its premiere at the “Raising Caine” concert, part of the Caine College’s inaugural gala celebration, by the Caine Brass Quintet on January 19, 2011 in the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall

Dedication Fanfare and Processional demonstrates the majesty of Logan Utah’s overlooking mountains in processional style, musically depicting the ongoing growth of the the university through the new College of the Arts. Essentially in two-part form with a coda, the work is unified by a triplet figure (musical, visual, and dramatic arts) and is characterized by a quartal motive that evolves into longer themes in successive permutations. The second section begins with an ambiguous rhythmic pulse (although it remains in duple meter) and gradually comes together in the driving processional theme, leading to a grand coda.

Golden Jubilee was written for the fiftieth anniversary celebration of Hillcrest Elementary School, Logan Utah. The piece was specifically prepared for the Utah State University Brass Ensemble for premiere at the school’s jubilee celebration on October 7, 2011. Through this effort, the composer (and also parent at the school) recognizes the quality education provided to the students by the staff and faculty at Hillcrest Elementary (Eric Markworth, Principal), with hope of continued success and growth for the next fifty years.

After a short fanfare introduction, this “jazz dance” in 6/8 time is presented in rondo-like form, and the melodic material comes from the term of the school’s existence (1961-2011) along with the initials of the school itself (H.E.S.). In assigning a sequential number to each note of the chromatic scale (C = 0, C# = 1, etc.), the numbers 1961 become C#-A-F#-C#, and 2011 becomes D-C-C#-C#; thus, the majority of the material is based on these pitches which act as a dominant progression to the rondo melody in E major.

The rondo theme appears twice before a contrasting sequential section, based rhythmically on the rondo theme. The rondo theme appears again in original form and two subsequent permutations (augmentation and inversion, respectively), before a break strain-like ostinato by the low brass over which are interjected statements of “H.E.S.” (Bb-E-B). A cascading transition leads to a final statement of the rondo theme and coda, complete with interjections of “H.E.S.” in the final drive to conclusion.

Full Score for Double Woodwind Quintet

Full Score refers to the occasion of this work’s composition: the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Logan Canyon Winds, the faculty woodwind quintet at Utah State University. The work was written at the request of Nicholas Morrison, an original member and clarinetist in the group, whose wish for the work to include the members of the student woodwind quintet at Utah State (the Caine Woodwind Quintet) resulted in a five-movement piece (performed attacca).

Although the work is not a concerto grosso, each movement includes one of the faculty quintet as a major player: Flute (piccolo), Oboe, Horn, Bassoon, and Clarinet, respectively. The idea of a sampler for each instrument in its own style is introduced by a recurring “promenade” figure that introduces each movement to varying degrees, with the opening and closing movements a literal translation in cyclic fashion.

The opening movement, “Promenade,” is in stately march style with first and second strains, a break strain, and a recapitulation that includes a piccolo obligato. The second movement, entitled “Dialogue,” features the oboe with the first thematic statement, following a short introduction based on the “Promenade” theme. The dialogue itself is in arch form (aba) with two complete statements, in Ab and B minor respectively.

Movement three, “Celebration,” features the horn in an alternating 4/4 - 3/4 melody. A short stop chorus, also featuring the horn, is the primary contrasting theme in this movement, along with a 3/4 bridge section. Although not literal, the recurrence of the main theme is meant to provide a rondo-like effect. Movement four is darker in character, perhaps reflecting on the challenges of a twenty-year collaboration. The bassoons provide a relentless ground bass over which layers of melodic material, first fragmented then complete, appear in ever-increasing intensity to a more optimistic climax and denouement before a final build-up and transition to the final movement.

The Finale, “Fruition,” begins with a complete restatement of the “Promenade” theme following a by a 12/8 strophic melody, introduced by a layered ostinato and including a virtuosic clarinet solo before “un-layering” (reverse order) in palindrome-like fashion. The strophic form continues in various permutations in a drive to a final coda, highlighted by final cascading and block statements by the two consorts (faculty and student) before the final measure in score order, as an ensemble.

As part of a raft of neoliberal economic reforms in the early 1990s, Brazilian president Fernando Collor de Mello and Argentine president Carlos Menem eliminated long-standing state financial support for cinema. National film production, distribution, and exhibition were deeply affected by the absence of the entire structure and legislation on which they had relied for decades. By the mid-1990s, however, new laws were passed reestablishing subsidies and credit lines—and allowing for a rebirth of national cinema in both countries. This comprehensive and accessible volume surveys Brazilian and Argentine cinematic production from its subsequent dramatic rebirth to the present. It addresses not only the commercially successful films but also the effects of globalization and cultural policies on public incentives for filmmaking. An indispensable resource for students of film and cultural studies, New Trends in Argentine and Brazilian Cinema is moreover an exciting glimpse into a momentous period in recent cinematic history.

The Obama administration is shaping up to be one of the most consequential in recent American history. In this book, a diverse group of presidential scholars step back from the partisan debate to consider the first two years of the Obama presidency through the lens of the U.S. constitution's theory, structure, and powers. They ask how Barack Obama understands and exercises the President's formal constitutional and informal powers and responsibilities of the president, from foreign policy and public policy to his political leadership of the Democratic Party and the nation as a whole. This timely first look at the Obama presidency establishes a constitutional yardstick of interest to scholars of the presidency, constitutional thought, and American political thought.

The Ute people of White Mesa have a long, colorful, but neglected history in the Four Corners region. Although they ranged into the Great Basin, Southwest, and parts of the Rocky Mountains as hunters, gatherers, and warriors, southeastern Utah was home. There they adapted culturally and physically to the austere environment while participating in many of the well-known events of their times.

In As If the Land Owned Us, Robert McPherson has gathered the wisdom of White Mesa elders as they imparted knowledge about their land—place names, uses, teachings, and historic events tied to specific sites—providing a fresh insight into the lives of these little-known people. While there have been few published studies about the Southern Utes, this ethnohistory is the first to mix cultural and historic events. The book illustrates the life and times of the White Mesa Utes as they faced multiple changes to their lifeways. It is time for their history to be told in their terms.

This volume is a cogent empirical analysis of the interplay between a region’s natural amenities and its socioeconomic evolution. It focuses on the rural sectors of America’s Intermountain West region, which lies between the Cascades and Sierra Nevada mountains to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east. Coherently structured and meticulously detailed, it adds much to our understanding of the ways an area’s forests, lakes, mountains, parkland and historic attractions affect residents’ sense of well-being as well as the sociodemographic and economic changes they experience. The book examines patterns of growth and change linked to the emergence of ‘New West’ conditions, assessing their implications for the wider community as well as discussing the impact these trends could have on the consumption of natural resources. It also points to ways in which communities and their development can be managed sustainably. The tight geographical focus of this valuable resource ensures a depth of analysis which can be applied to similar regions worldwide. Based on a large-scale, random-sample survey of both full-time and seasonal residents, it provides a much-needed overview of the macro-level economic, demographic, and social transformations affecting rural communities in America. As such, the book has relevance for all researchers concerned with rural development, the changes impacting rural landscapes, and natural resource management.

Held annually, the McCall, Idaho, Winter Carnival has become a modern tradition. A festival and celebration, it is also a source of community income and opportunity for shared community effort; a chance to display the town attractively to outsiders and to define and assert McCall's identity; and consequently, a source of disagreement among citizens over what their community is, how it should be presented, and what the carnival means.

Though rooted in the broad traditions of community festival, annual civic events, often sponsored by chambers of commerce, such as that in McCall, are as much expressions of popular culture and local commerce as of older traditions. Yet they become dynamic, newer community traditions, with artistic, informal, and social meanings and practices that make them forms of folklore as well as commoditized culture. Winter Carnival is the first volume in a new Utah State University Press series titled Ritual, Festival, and Celebration and edited by folklorist Jack Santino.

Late Medieval and Renaissance art was surprisingly pushy. Its architecture demanded that people move through it in prescribed patterns; its sculptures played elaborate games alternating between concealment and revelation; while its paintings charged viewers with imaginatively moving through them. Viewers wanted to interact with artwork in emotional and/or performative ways. This inventive and personal interface between viewers and artists sometimes conflicted with the Church’s prescribed devotional models, and in some cases it complemented them. Artists and patrons responded to the desire for both spontaneous and sanctioned interactions by creating original ways to amplify devotional experiences. The authors included here study the provocation and the reactions associated with medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. These essays trace the impetus towards interactivity from the points of view of their creators and those who used them.
