Abstract

Treatment of oak stumps with herbicides substantially reduced the percentage of stumps with living sprouts, but regeneration frequency and abundance 15 years after cutting of the stand did not differ between treated and control areas. Dominant-codominant oak stump sprouts were present on only 3 percent of the sample plots and constitued about 3.5 percent of the 373 dominant-codominants per acre. On this good site in central Pennsylvania, aspen, red maple, and black cherry seedlings and seedling sprouts completely dominated the slower growing black, scarlet, and white oak sprouts.
