Berryman Institute and USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine whether coqui frogs from their non-native range responded to native predators the same way as frogs from their native range. Frogs were collected from two sites in Puerto Rico (El Yunque and Rio Abajo) in May 2006 and one site in Hawaii (Hilo) in June 2006. At each site, frogs were collected from a high (> 700 m) and low (< 300 m) elevation population. Of the total number of frogs collected, 100 males were randomly selected to be used in this study (45 and 55 from Hawaii and Puerto Rico, respectively). Three tailless whipscorpions (Phrynus longipes) and three tarantulas (Avicularia laeta) were also collected in Puerto Rico in field sites where frogs were collected and shipped back to a laboratory. Description of file: One .csv file listing the study results in tabular form. Definition of acronyms, codes, and abbreviations: Date: Date of test. Test: Test number of that particular day. PredSide: Side of aquaria (left or right) in which the predator was kept for that test. Name: Name of individual predator. Predator: Predator species as either Phyrnus (whipscorpion), or Tarantula. Range: Range from which the focal frog of that test was collected. Popn: Population from either range where the focal frog was collected. HH – Hilo High, HL, Hilo Low, EYH – El Yunque High, EYL – El Yunque Low, RAH – Rio Abajo High, RAL – Rio Abajo Low Number: Number assigned to individual frogs for identification. SVL: Snout-vent length in mm. DidntMove: Binary code (0, 1) indicating whether the focal frog did, or did not move during the test. MovedSides: Number of times focal frog crossed from one side of the container to the other. StartSide: Side of the container the frog moved to first. EndSide: Side of the container where the frog was at the end of the test. Time2Move: Amount of time before the frog moved from its original starting location. TimePredSide: Amount of time the frog spent on the predator side of the aquaria. TimeOtherSide: Amount of time the frog spent on the predator-free side of the aquaria. %predside: Percent of total time spent on the predator side of the aquaria. %otherside: Percent of total time spent on the predator-free side of the aquaria.
