Project summary, description or abstract: The USU Na lidar has been upgraded to be able to measure temperature and winds in the lower thermosphere up to ~ 115 km routinely. The new capability, coupled with the existing nightglow instruments at USU, enables the investigation of the extreme large wind and shears in this region and their correlation to the atmospheric gravity waves activities in the upper mesosphere. 8. Brief description of collection and processing of data: The lidar hardware is set up so that the lidar signals were binned with 150 m in line of sight direction and saved every minute. Different temporal and spatial resolutions can be applied later during data processing, when the temperature and wind information in the upper atmosphere are derived. For this study, the temporal and spatial (vertical) resolutions are 1-hour and 4-km respectively. 9. Description of files (names, or if too numerous, number of files, file type(s): There are three files for temperature (masstdT*), zonal wind (masstdU*) and meridional wind (masstdV*). The data structure of the three files are the same. The data start from line 36, after "begin data" and the line with all the headers. Each line represents the data for each Universal Time (UT). People can read the UT day in the second column and UT time (hour) in the third column. The fourth column is the results for 70 km, which, not surprisingly, are all 999. The fifth column is the uncertainties (also 999) for the same altitude. Then, the sixth column for 70.5 km, and its uncertainty in the seventh column. So on and so forth until 119.5 km. The step is 0.5 km, but it is based on the interpolation. Real resolution (vertical smoothing) is 4-km. 12. Descriptions of parameters/variables: The data products include profiles of neutral temperature and winds between 70 km and 120 km. a.
