Abstract
The value of carotene as a precursor of vitamin A in the animal body was shown conclusively by the work of Moore (20). Rats which had been depleted of vitamin A and fed carotene following the depletion period, showed vitamin A absorption maxima in liver tissue when assayed spectrophotometrically. Depleted rats fed on the carotene-free diet showed no vitamin A absorption spectra. Capper, McKibben and Prentice (6) showed that chickens were also able to convert carotene into vitamin A.
