Abstract
Bacteriophage λ and its variant λdg, present in the prophage condition within their lysogenic host Escherichia coli K12, can be induced to vegetative multiplication by irradiation with ultraviolet light. Experiments conducted within this laboratory to determine the intra-cellular synthesis of λ and λdg after lytic induction indicate changes in concentration ratios between the two bacteriophages. This change in ratio is dependent upon the growth conditions of the bacteria and the dose of ultraviolet light used for the induction process. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this thesis study.
