Abstract

The great losses in bean production in the vicinity of Logan during the summer of 1928, brought about an investigation as to the cause for such losses. In some fields there was a total loss of the crop while in others the injury was less severe. An examination of the infested plants showed that the flowers had withered and fallen, and the leaves were drying up and would fall at the slightest touch. This condition was uncommon in this region and its cause unknown. However, it was noted that on plants where this condition occurred numerous small thrips were present which appeared to be feeding on the plant parts. At the suggestion of Dr. H. J. Pack, the writer began studies to determine the possible relationship between the thrips and the great decrease in bean yield in infested fields.
