Abstract

Yosemite Valley, though famed for its scenic beauty and geologic history, is also of outstanding biological interest, especially to nature-lovers and scientists. A favorable climate produces a vast variety of life forms. The varied physiography of the area effects a great diversity of plant communities and vertebrate animal habitats. The number of plant and vertebrate animal species is particularly large for so small an area. The distribution of these species should reflect both general and local environmental conditions. In this paper it is the endeavor of the writer to (1) survey briefly the distribution of plants and vertebrate animals within a transect across Yosemite Valley; (2) classify the life into communities and life belts; and (3) survey some climactic and other physical conditions of the environment.
