Abstract
Winslow and Palmer (1910) stated: "Sanitarians are continually seeking and seeking in vain, for some criterion by which sewage pollution of human origin may be distinguished from surface wash and agricultural land," and conclude their study of intestinal streptococci by remarking that: "...the use of mannite broth as a differential test for streptococci of human origin would seem sufficiently promising to warrant further study."
