Abstract

The tumorous head trait first appeared in a stock of flies maintained at the University of Texas which had previously been collected at Ocahuizolta, Mexico. The tumorous head trait is evidently deleterious to the individual expressing it so it was not evident if the trait would continue to be expressed if it was not selected for. Later investigations indicated that alleles of the tumorous head trait were uniformly absent in some and present in other "wild" laboratory stocks. Different alleles had varying effects on the percentage of expression of the trait. It was not known why alleles of the trait which have no phenotypic effects are maintained in some natural populations.
