Abstract

Studies of the patterns and sequences of molts in rodents are too few to permit generalizations concerning the taxonomic or ecologic significance of these phenomena. Noteworthy studies of the molts of Thomomys umbrinus (Morejohn and Howard, 1956), Peromyscus boylii (Brown, 1963), Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis (Gottschang, 1956), Microtus californicus (Ecke and Kinney, 1956), and Dicrostonyx (Hansen, 1959) have utilized live-trapped captive animals. However, most reports in the literature have been based upon the examination of prepared study skins, and these data have been summarized by Ecke and Kinney (1956) and Morejohn and Howard (1956). To date the molts and pelages of heteromyid rodents have not been adequately described.
