Abstract
This paper is a taxonomic revision of the bee subgenera Osmia, Chalcosmia and Cephalosmia of the genus Osmia in North America. Cephalosmia occurs only in North America, while Osmia and Chalcosmia occur also in the Old World. Fifteen species and three subspecies are treated: one species, Osmia (Chalcosmia) alamedensis, is described as new, and one species, Osmia (Osmia) cornifrons (Radoszkowski), is new to the North American bee fauna. Two names are placed in synonymy for the first time, and one other name occurs in a new subgeneric combination. Although primarily a taxonomic thesis, this study includes data on larvae, subgeneric relationships, distribution, biologies of nine species, and flower records. Over 26,000 specimens were examined during this study.
