Abstract
The genus Chrysothamnus has long been noted for the great variation within its limits. More than eighty species have been technically described in this genus. In the nauseosus species complex as many as thirty-eight species have been named. An excellent morphological study of the group brought about the reduction of the number of recognized species to twelve with forty subspecies. In C. nauseosus variation has been so expressed by Hall: Nothing can be more certain than that these forty-two attemps to recognize species and varieties do not by any means exhaust the resources of the group. Every autumnal excursion into a new district brings to light one or more forms not previously described. (Hall, 1919, p. 161)
