Abstract
The first red raspberries were cultivated in Europe 400 years ago. They were grown for the first time in the United States some time before 1800 (Gourley and Howlett, 1941). The cultivation of raspberries is limited largely to the northern part of the United States, chiefly in the cool, temperate areas. Areas from which extensive quantities of red raspberry are shipped are located in southern New Jersey, in the Hudson river valley, in western Michigan, in the Puyallup valley of Washington, and near Sebastopol, Washington.
