Research on Capitol Hill and Elevating Undergraduate Research in the 2000s

Utah State University has a strong history of showcasing student research, particularly through events like Posters on the Hill in Washington D.C., where USU holds the record for the most student posters accepted in one year. Research on Capitol Hill (ROCH), initiated in 2001 by Joyce Kinkead and Steve Roens, offers students the opportunity to present their innovative research to policymakers, demonstrating the impact of state support for their work. Topics range from drought-tolerant plants to social media trends, with students engaging in meaningful conversations that could influence policy.

In addition to this national recognition, USU honors outstanding undergraduate researchers through the Undergraduate Researcher of the Year Award, established by David and Terry Peak in 2004 and later endowed in 2008. The award celebrates students who demonstrate outstanding dedication to research through independent inquiry, coursework, and participation in research conferences. Each year, one exceptional student is selected from the eight academic colleges to receive the Peak Prize, the highest undergraduate research honor at USU. This recognition has encouraged students to push the boundaries of knowledge, share their findings on national platforms, and contribute meaningfully to their fields.

In 2007, USU’s Undergraduate Research Program received the Robins Achievement of the Year Award, one of the university’s most prestigious honors. The award recognizes accomplishments defined by exceptional ability, distinctive effort, and meaningful contributions to the university community. The Robins Awards, named in honor of former student body president Bill Robins, represent the highest level of achievement at USU, making this recognition a defining moment for the Undergraduate Research Program. Winning this award solidified the program’s role as a vital part of the university’s mission and celebrated the students and faculty who have made it a success.
