Session I: Where We've Been

Abstract

The modular microsatellite concept developed by SSTL has been remarkably successful. It has been used on over 25 missions in the last two decades for a wide range of applications and customers. Its design philosophies are discussed, which have permitted the design to evolve over time, and in particular has permitted space missions to benefit quickly from the continuing development of emerging terrestrial commercial-off-the-shelf technologies. Breakthrough technologies are discussed which have led to increases in capability and utility of small satellite missions. Furthermore, it will be shown that the execution of frequent missions brings its own benefits in providing a rapid feedback in the implementation of design improvements.
