Point of Discovery/Informant Bio
Cole Bunderson was born and raised in Castledale Utah in a Mormon family. After graduating from high school he served a Mormon mission in Micronesia and then intermittently attended school at Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and Utah State while working at a variety of jobs. He is currently 27 and was married about one and a half years ago.
Cole told me this legend while we were at work at the Space Dynamics Laboratory. He said that the story is often shared among Mormon members of the community in Emery County at casual gatherings.
There is an old Mormon church in Castledale that is condemned now but when I was a kid I remember going there often for family reunions and other things because my grandma had a key. Anyway, my great great grandpa was once a bishop in that old church for 26 years straight. The story goes that sometime like 20 years ago a little kid was exploring the church and ran into an old guy who was very nice and played and chatted with him for a little while. Later, the little kid saw a picture of my great great grandpa who had been dead for many years and immediately identified him as the guy who had played with him inside the church.
Cole told this story about what happened in the old church with a very neutral tone that didn’t seem to display any signs of doubt nor belief as if he was just relaying information that he had heard but hadn’t fully considered himself. He said that the story is really just a casual topic that is shared among church members in the town in non-formal settings.
