Abstract

The objective of this fact sheet is to help producers understa nd the nutrient loss and retention characteristics of different t ypes of manure storage. The concentrat ion of nutrients in manure storage facilities is important for planning land application activit ies. Nutrient concentration is usually the critical factor in determining the am ount of manure to be spread per acre of land. Manure systems similar in type and management may have characteristically similar concentrat ions of manure nutrients. Howe ver, manure nutrient concentrat ions can be highly variable, even among similar systems, so laboratory analysis of the manure should always be performed to establish a trend or baseline of manure nutrient concentration.
