Abstract

Big Water, Utah is a small town located just north of the Arizona border in an area of unique scenic character. The town is strategically located as a gateway to outdoor recreation opportunities. It lies between Lake Powell, the newly designated Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, and the Paria Wilderness. See Figure 1 for an aerial photograph of Big Water and the surrounding area. The region expects growth in the coming years, through both increased tourism and development. Current residents of the area requested planning assistance from the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Department of Utah State University. The assistance provided has proceeded in three phases and at three scales.
