Abstract
Calibration and analytical techniques, as well as equipment for obtaining pictures of the night airglow wave structure are described as a means to studying gravity wave phenomena. Low light level television cameras are employed so that observation points may be changed to gain better airglow views. Field stars are recorded to calibrate the television images in terms of elevation and azimuth, thereby permitting calculation of the latitude and longitude of any airglow structure. The formulations for the coordinate system and the star positions are presented for automating the calculations on a microcomputer. Error compensation is demonstrated, together with methods of quantifying the gravity wave horizontal wavelengths and velocities. The techniques are applicable with both television and photographic data.
