Description
We have developed a platform called Tethys Platform to aid in the creation and delivery of water resource web applications or web apps. The web app medium is an exciting and effective way to share new developments in water resources modeling, hydro-informatics, and decision support tools. Tethys Platform bridges the divide that prevents many scientist and engineers from developing web apps by providing (1) a suite of free and open source (FOSS) software that address the unique data and computational needs common to water resources web app development and (2) a Python software development kit (SDK) for incorporating the functionality of each software element into web apps. The software suite includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for storing, publishing, and manipulating spatial datasets; interface elements for creating interactive visualizations of spatial data (maps) and tabular data (plots); and software for managing cloud computing resources. The FOSS projects included in the software suite are PostgreSQL database with PostGIS extension, 52 North WPS with GRASS GIS, GeoServer, OpenLayers, and HTCondor. The Python SDK includes modules for interacting with each of the software components of Tethys and interfaces for interacting with external dataset services such as HydroShare and CKAN for managing file datasets. This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1135483.
