Abstract
The Utah State University Concrete Canoe Team is comprised of engineering students of all disciplines who plan, design, and construct a concrete canoe. The concrete canoe is one of the oldest engineering competitions in the nation. It is a contest of ingenuity, design, construction skill, technical writing, presenting, and physicality. USU is among the top 5 concrete canoe teams in the nation (2013), and won their regional competition in 2013, 2012 and 2011. This year the team built Promontory, a themed canoe inspired by the Golden Spike and the joining of the Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit in Brigham City, UT. Promontory is built using ultra-lightweight concrete that is approximately 75% the unit weight of water. A fiberglass mesh layer and pre-tensioned steel cables provide additional reinforcement. Promontory is the best canoe ever built by Utah State.
