Abstract
A distinction has traditionally been made between natural and built scenes. Scenes containing both environments (mixed-environment scenes) have rarely been studied. In this study, participants were shown a set of photos containing natural, built, and mixed-environment scenes and were asked to categorize each photo as either a natural environment or a built environment. Both children and adults participated. Results from this study suggest the need to distinguish mixed-environment scenes from natural and built scenes. Results also show that children are more likely to categorize photos as natural environments than are adults.
