Abstract
Livestock production on communal rangelands of Morocco is of central importance to the agricultural economy of the country. But the sustainable natural resources of these regions are undergoing serious degradation due to various socioeconomic and agroecological factors. Drawing on on-farm research data, alternative sustainable mixed farming systems are conceptualized. Partial budgeting and budgeting techniques are used to assess the profitability of these production systems. It is concluded that farm profitability could be significantly improved by reducing livestock production costs (feed and forage costs) while increasing forage production on communal rangelands.
