Description
Quiet-time ionospheric electric fields are derived for different universal times, seasons, and the maximum and minimum phases of solar activity. The resulting vertical (E x B) drifts at equatorial latitudes compare well with radar backscatter measurements. Both horizontal and vertical components of similar drifts at middle latitudes show significant semi-diurnal periodicities, again consistent with observations. It is found that at F region altitudes these drifts can at times compete with vertical plasma motions induced by ion drag. Variations of ionospheric electric fields at plasmaspheric (L = 3) altitudes are displayed and their effects on plasma motions discussed.
