Abstract
The so-called social wasps of the New World are now placed in three subfamilies, viz., the Vespinae, Polistinae, and Polybiinae. These three groups are so distinct, structurally, that I must regard them as forming at least as many genealogical lines, each of them derived from its own ancestral stock of solitary wasps. What-ever similarity in habits they now exhibit is solely due to convergence and caused by the unavoidable reaction of communal life upon individual behavior.
