Formwork: The Art of Thinking Through Making

Jamie Stevens, Utah State University

Abstract

The aim of my research is to focus on expressive form as content specifically related to graphic design. I will be committed to letting function follow form. For six weeks, I will create daily compositions based on a systemized matrix and my own imagination. A basic overview of the steps my research will include are: Collect, Sort, Structure, Study, Archive, and Present. I will collect pieces of design and analyze them as influences. I will then sort these pieces into specific areas of focus and then structure them into matrices which will become a reconfigurable foundation to how I create new work. Each daily piece will take me no longer than two hours to complete. I will then create a digital archive on a public facing platform where I store each work. This process will mine inspiration and content in a way that can be loose enough to engage a formal and experimental approach without letting that content or a specific application control the results. I will be building on the famous design work that came before me to become something new. The goal of my research is to create self structured restrictions in order to become aware of and intentionally leverage influences in my graphic design work. I will have to rapidly adapt to the unexpected and will analyze how this process affects how I create work and how it relates to my field of study.
