Abstract

The creation of reliquaries was designed to encase the bones of a saint in the most lavish and expensive container possible. My research will focus on the ornamentation and symbolism found in arm reliquaries of the 13th century. Arm reliquaries hold significance in their power to elevate the mortal body to the status of saint, and their lasting influence beyond death. This study will display how this decorative cage inspires and creates reverence and adoration to the bones of someone long lost.
