Abstract
Overall/effective percent alignment (PA) was proposed as a more realistic measure of strand alignment than the surface PA for oriented strandboard. The proposed measure was based on the ratio of modulus of elasticity in the parallel and perpendicular directions. Three methods were developed to derive this measure. Both the numerical equations and graphical interpretations were presented for each method to facilitate the analysis for three species (quaking aspen, southern pine, and Douglas-fir). The advantage, limitation, and specific application of each method were discussed. Using a real example, it was shown that surface PA could overestimate the realistic overall/effective PA by a factor of two.
