Abstract

This report presents a vegetation classification for the aspen-dominated forests of the Pike and San Isabel National Forests in south-central Colorado. It describes 25 quaking aspen community types by using narratives, tables, and photographs. A diagnostic key utilizing undergrowth indicator plant species facilitates field identification of the community types. The geographical distribution, environmental setting, species composition, site productivity, probability of applying prescribed fire, livestock grazing relationships, aesthetics and recreation values, forest management considerations, stand structure, successional status, forest health issues, wildlife habitat, and relationship to other studies in western North America are included in each community-type description. The classification and descriptions are based on 90 sample plots distributed throughout the Pike and San Isabel National Forests.
