Abstract
Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and balsam poplar (P. balsamifera L.) represent about 40% of Alberta's forest resources, but utilization is only 1% of the total available. Decay and slain are two major factors limiting utilization of these species. Major decay-causing agents and types of decay of aspen and balsam poplar are reviewed, and the implications for management and utilization are discussed.
