Abstract
Rates of photosynthesis and dark respiration for greenhouse grown trembling aspen and bigtooth aspen seedlings were measured using single attached leaves and whole seedlings. Whole seedlings of neither species differed significantly in photosynthetic rate, dark respiration, leaf area ratio, or dry matter accumulation. The single leaf dark respiration rate of each species was similar to the rate observed for the whole seedling, but the leaf net photosynthetic rate was significantly higher than that of the whole seedling. Leaves of trembling aspen showed higher net photosynthetic rates than leaves of bigtooth aspen, but rates of dark respiration and carbon dioxide compensation points of the individual leaves were not statistically different between species.
