Abstract
Stem sections of two bigtooth aspen and two trembling aspen were exposed to 14CO2. Relatively large amounts of radioactivity (14C-labeled alcohol-soluble compounds) were later detected in the cortex and cambial region of both species. Lesser amounts of activity were found in xylem and phloem; the smallest amount in the nonconducting phloem. These results indicate that photosynthate produced in the cortex is available for use by the cambium and that some is likely stored in xylem and phloem parenchyma as well as in cortical parenchyma.
