Abstract
Following a severe windstorm, 86% of the fresh blowdown in a Colorado aspen stand exhibited sign of the root and butt-rotting fungus Fomes applanatus. Only 5.2% of trees that remained standing showed this sign, indicating a strong positive relationship between blowdown and occurrence of this pathogen. As a result of the predisposition action of this fungus, 2.3% of the bolewood biomass of this stand was lost as windthrow.
