Abstract
The quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx., is the most wide- spread tree in North America (Cottam, 1963; Fowels, 1965); a closely related species, Populus tremula L., occurs in Europe. The aspen in the western United States is considered by some authors (Sargent, 1961) to be a separate variety, P. tremuloides var. aurea Daniels, but most taxonomists do not accept the validity of this variety.
