Abstract
A 60-meter-wide ecotone between Populus woodland and Scirpus–Juncus–Calamagrostis meadow on a former lakeshore in southern Saskatchewan was characterized by the following features in relation to the adjacent woodland and adjacent meadow: intermediate elevation; intermediate depths to water table; maximum snow accumulation and maximum snow persistence in the spring; maximum plant species diversity; maximum variety of growth forms (trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species); maximum surface accumulation of L and F organic layers.
