Abstract
Intensive study of the production of hybrids within the genus Populus, section Leuce was first undertaken in 1956. Of the 239 crosses attempted since 1956 at The Institute of Paper Chemistry, 136 were successful and have been outplanted in test plantings. Hybridization techniques, types of experimental crosses attempted, and a preliminary evaluation of the aspen hybrids produced are considered. Results indicate that large-scale seed production and subsequent seedling production of aspen hybrids appear to be feasible. Growth of several different types of experimental materials appears quite promising, with early height growth of selected crosses approaching, and in some cases exceeding, three feet of growth per year.
