Abstract
Gelatinous fibers, diagnostic features of tension wood in the bole and branches of hardwoods, have been either ignored or stated to be absent in the roots. A preliminary light microscopic study of stained cross sections from the roots of Populus tremuloides Michx. provides evidencethat gelatinous fibers are present in the roots of at least this hardwood species. More extensive studies will be needed to substantiate the presence of actual tension wood in roots.
