Abstract
The initiation and development of unisexual and bisexual flowers of Populus tremuloides were investigated in whole mounts and tissue sections. In the New Haven, Connecticut area, the morphological changes marking the transition from a presumably vegetative meristem to a floral meristem began in early June. Differentiation of pistils and stamens occurred in early July. Archespores were formed in late July in anthers and by mid-September in ovules. The similarity in time of initiation and development of unisexual and bisexual flowers, and the absence of reduced organs of the opposite sex in unisexual flowers suggest that neither minor changes in photoperiod, nor seasonal trends in temperature, can be major factors in the variation in sex expression of this species.
