Abstract

The 'unsaturated alcohol fraction' from P. tremuloides heartwood (R. A. Abramovitch, R. G. Micetich, and S. J. Smith, Tappi, 46, 37 (1963)) has been found to contain α- and β-amyrin, butyrospermol, 24-methylenecycloartanol, lupeol, and α-amyrenonol. Some aspects of the infrared and n.m.r. spectra of these compounds are discussed and the suggestion is made that the tritisterols and orysterols may actually be C₃₁H₅₂O triterpenes containing a cyclopropane ring.
