Abstract
Extracts of 50 living and 9 dried plants were prepared and used as moistening media for the germination of Pinus banksiana seeds. All of the plants selected for testing grow at least in fair abundance in Pinus banksiana forests of northern Michigan. Approximately 1/5 of the extracts inhibited and 1/5 stimulated germination. The others had little or no effect. Extracts of Prunus pumila, Prunus virginiana, Populus tremuloides and Solidago uliginosa are effective inhibitors while those of Pinus resinosa, Amelanchier laevis, and several Cladonias are effective stimulators. The biologically active extracts are being investigated further in an effort to isolate the active components.
