Abstract
The annual growth of aspen (Populus tremuloides) has been shown to undergo large reductions with increasing intensity of defoliation by the forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) in northern Minnesota. A major variable which might have contributes to the relationship, however, is rainfall. The objective of the study here reported was to ascertain the influence of the sum of April, May, June and July precipitation upon the basal area growth of aspen, both in years preceding defoliation and in years during defoliation.
