Abstract
A study of the problems of spruce reproduction in Manitoba and Saskatchewan was begun in 1947 as part of the Federal Forestry Branch's general investigation of reproduction on cut-over and burned-over areas east of the Rocky Mountains. Preliminary surveys indicated that white spruce (Picea glauca2), locally the most important economic species, was regenerating poorly on logged or burned areas (Candy, 1951). Earlier research in this district had pointed to the same conclusion (Phelps, 1940).
