Abstract
This is the first monographic paper to be published on the Tiphiinae of eastern North America. The subfamily as recognized by the author is essentially that proposed by Pate (1947). ln eastern North America it is represented chiefly by species of the genus Tiphia. Although there have been occasional descriptions of eastern species of Tiphiinae published since 1810, the first worker to recognize valid structural characters in this group was J. R. Malloch (1918). He published a key to North American species and described 17 eastern species and varieties (now reduced by synonomy to 10 species). Allen (1934) published descriptions on 12 new eastern species (now reduced by synonomy to 8) . In 1961, Allen published a key to the genus Tiphia north of Mexico in which 27 eastern species were recognized. This revision recognizes 52 species and subspecies which is a relatively small addition to those previously recognized. It contains descriptions of 11 new species and subspecies. Perhaps of more significance is the linking of sexes in a group in which they are extremely dimorphic. At one time or another the author has studied the types of all the species recognized in this paper which are deposited chiefly in the collections of the Illinois Natural History Survey, the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, and the U.S. National Museum.
