Abstract
During the period from 1855 to 1913 numerous new species of Tiphiinae were named and inadequately described by European specialists in Hymenoptera. In more recent years many new characters have been discovered which were not known to these original describers. Apparently many of these species have not been critically studied since they were originally described. In 1930, A.B. Gahan examined a number of types of Asiatic Tiphia in the British Museum and his observations were incorporated in Allen and Jaynes (1930) paper on Asiatic Tiphia. In 1939, G. Arnold published redescriptions of African Tiphia from types deposited in European Museums, using terms and characters distinct from those defined by Allen and Jaynes and used by American authors since 1930. His descriptions, and particularly his drawings are quite valuable in the identification of African species.
