Abstract
The external characteristics of the Japanese honey-bee, Apis cerana cerana Fabr. have already been studied by Tokuda (1924) and Okada, Sakai and Hase· gawa (1956), in comparison with those of the European species, A. mellifera L. Meanwhile, during the course of the writers' comprehensive study with respect to this species, they obtained some additional knowledge on the quantitative nature of certain characteristics as described in the present paper. The comparison was made here only between representative samples of both species. The results may serve, however, as introductory to further studies based upon intraspecific and interpopulational comparisons. Some observations on the differences between the drones produced by a normal queen and laying workers will also be presented. The study was carried out under the direction of Prof. Tohru Uchida, to whom the writers are much indebted. They wish to express their cordial thanks also to Mr. Y. Matsuda (Yamaguchi City) for his kindness in sending them a n adequate colony of the Japanese bee.
