Abstract

In the domestication experiments with bumble-bees (7, 8) it has been observed from year to year that there was always a larger or smaller number of young queens which were reluctant to hibernate, and after hibernation a high percentage of mortality was noted among the queens emerging from hibernation. There were also several queens which would not, or could not start nest building. Experience with domestication and microscopic observations led to the assumption that the above difficulties had some connection with various diseases. Therefore a study of diseases in bumble-bees was begun.
