Abstract
The variations in the coloring of B. pratorum, as may be noted from the first intimate acquaintance with them, is in rather close relation with geography. Thus, forms without the yellow bands on the prothorax or only with indications of the same are not rarities in North Germany, (Schwerin, Bremen) and in the Alps; they are encountered in several localities in South Germany (Jena), and also in Austria (Steiermark):; At the same time they are totally unknown within the confines of Russia. On the contrary, forms with the greatest development of yellow markings have a prefernece for inhabiting northeastern Europe and northwestern Asia. Thus B. pratorum var. perplexus (Rad.) (= var.citrinus Schmiedeknecht) does not according to Schmiedeknecht, frequent South Germany, however, in our country (Russia) it is not rare in many places; (and) ♀♀ donovanellus (Kirby) and var. formido (Harr.) have remained to this day unknown, at least they evidently are not encountered in Western Europe. In the northern strip of Eurasia B. pratorum and geographical situation has been worked over for this species with the possibility of clearly establishing its varieties, placing it in determinative tables. As we shall see in time, B. pratorum L., as well as B. jonellus (Kirby), and B. hypnorum (L.), becomes more increasingly yellow the farther eastward it is found.
